There was a lot of land out there to start new lives and better life style. but what they didn't know is that the ride to the west was one heck of a ride. Once the hit the mountains life got hard. Very fast. Harsh climates, rocky terrain. Many people died trying to cross the mountains. One the way to the Pacific ocean people met Indians, they traded, negotiated, and bargained.
